Johnston Marklee’s Beachfront Vault House Holds a Surprising Interior
California-based architects Johnston Marklee challenges the typology commonly found on narrow oceanfront lots with their design for Vault House, situated in a densely developed beach site in Southern California. “Instead of directing its focus on the single prime ocean view,” ArchDaily notes, “an array of transparent interior spaces layered inside the main volume offer multiple oblique views through the house while capturing natural light from a variety of angles.” As seen in the images above, the simple rectilinear form belies a complex interior in which the inhabitant can journey through a number of unique and unexpected sections. Johnston Marklee are among a number of innovative firms taking part in the inaugural Chicago Architecture Biennial this fall.
